Miniatur Wunderland was started by two German brothers who decided in the late 1990s to leave their successful businesses and start a new venture. They convinced a local bank to lend them 2 million German marks and in 2000, they opened their doors.

Initially, they had 20 employees and were hoping to get 100,000 visitors in their first year. Instead, 300,000 people showed up, and they were off and running. In 2010, he said, more than 1 million people showed up. Today, there are 210 employees who manage the 14,000-square-foot collection, which in addition to the 900 trains also includes 5,000 model cars, trucks, and other vehicles, and an astounding 250,000 miniature people.

There’s a single track climbing through the Swiss Alps. There’s a giant representation of the Hamburg Central Train Station, rail bridges, tunnels, cargo trains, express trains, an new airport, area 51, and more.

As if Miniatur Wunderland wasn’t already big enough, they plan is to double the layout by the year 2020.

The Magor Car Corporation was a New Jersey-based car builder, who from the early 1900s, concentrated on the manufacture of freight cars for international export. However, in 1963, the company was encouraged to give new consideration to the domestic market, based in part upon the success of Magor’s aluminum designed freight cars. Previously, Magor had cooperated with Reynolds Materials and the Southern Railway to mass produce the first aluminum freight car for the U.S. market. In 1966, Magor introduced the 4750 cubic capacity aluminum covered hopper. Marketed as a car whose light tare meant more payload capacity, the Magor 4750 Covered Hopper, which proved to be one of its most successful aluminum-based designs.

The Canstock car was the result of a development program designed to improve the transport of coiled steel used to make cans.  Conventional boxcars at the time could only carry six coils of steel without trapping the fork lift in the car. By placing doors where the last pair of coils were placed, the fork lift was able to place the last coils straight in and straight out without turning and enabled the car to carry eight coils bringing the load weight closer to the car’s capacity.
